Here are some ways to participate in your Union:

Local Union Committees are made up of members who are actively interested in the affairs of the Union. Current Union Committees include political education, educational, and organizing.

Worksite Stewards are the UBC's primary volunteer representatives in the workplace. Stewards are members of the Local Union, who are appointed to assist other members by providing information about the Union, answer questions about the contract, try to settle problems with or without grievances, and work as organizers to help build the collective power of the worksite. If you would like to become a steward, talk to your Local Union staff representative about the resources and training that are available.

Member Organizers are active Local members who help organize non-Union workers into UBC. Many member organizers start out by campaigning to bring a Union into their own workplace, and end up so knowledgeable and interested in the Union that they continue to work on other campaigns. Member organizers learn communication skills and organizing skills, and work closely with staff in meeting prospective members who want to learn about the benefits of joining a Union.

Political Activists are members who are interested in and willing to organize co-workers around political activities that will improve life for working Canadians. Activities range from lobbying politicians at the Municipal, Provincial, and Federal levels, to signing petitions, to writing letters to the editor. SEIU is interested in building a community of political activists who will fight not only for the election of the NDP, but for issues affecting working people and their families.
